IT teams are struggling to keep up with massive changes to day-to-day operations and the accelerated rate of cloud adoption associated with a remote and virtual workforce. Enterprises are fast-tracking their adoption of remote work technologies. Leveraging SaaS to enable this transition allows enterprises to overcome the hurdles associated with the traditional method of business operations. With an increase in adoption of SaaS applications, the focus on managing and securing these applications is critical.

To assist organizations tackle the current challenge, AppOmni sought input and perspective from IT security practitioners across a wide range of industry sectors. These data points provide insight into where the emerging threats, miscofiguration risk, and SaaS vulnerabilities are converging and driving demand for new strategies.

Impact of Market Climate

Enterprises are leveraging SaaS to enable the rapid transition to remote work technologies and overcome the hurdles associated with traditional method of doing business. AppOmni found that more than 90 percent of IT professionals recently received additional responsibilities and two-thirds have less time to effectively manage and secure SaaS applications.

The survey found that there is a direct correlation between adoption of WFH initiatives, adoption of SaaS, and increase in additional responsibilities. All of these factors resulting in IT’s reduced capacity to effectively manage and secure SaaS applications.

SaaS Management and Operations

Risk of misconfiguration is by far the most prevalent problem for SaaS applications. SaaS applications are incredibly powerful, and integrate with a variety of APIs and data sources which creates complexity. There are so many different configuration settings, and the control panel for these applications are all different. It’s terribly time consuming to track and manage this manually, which is why they are very much prone to errors and misconfiguration.

According to our survey, only 31% of IT employ automated tooling to ensure SaaS configurations continued to follow best practice. Approximately 59% of respondents continues rely on manual efforts and audits. Perhaps, not surprisingly, approximately 10% of respondents have no processes in place.
